Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Managing a Multi-Billion, Multi-Year Capital Modernization Plan

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), the nation’s second-largest public transit system serving Chicago and 40 suburbs with more than 520 million rides annually, launched a multi-year, multi‑billion-dollar modernization program covering station rehab, fleet upgrades and new commuter technologies. CTA’s existing PMIS had been discontinued and lacked customization, consolidated data and cross‑project reporting, creating delays, manual data work and limited cost‑and‑project visibility across programs of varying sizes.

CTA implemented e-Builder Enterprise with help from Kristin Fallon Associates, using workflows to standardize processes, migrating budgets into the system and automating data imports. The platform centralized project and cost information, improved reporting and turnaround visibility, reduced manual entry and errors, and was rapidly adopted across departments—more than 1,250 users since August 2011—with overwhelmingly positive feedback.
