Boulder County - Customer Case Study

Boulder County Road Maintenance Department, serving a rapidly growing and geographically diverse population in Colorado, faced increasing exposure to liability and public safety risks from missing, damaged or incorrectly placed road signs. Inspecting and updating signage was inefficient and error-prone—field crews had to make multiple trips and rely on paper maps and videotapes—making it difficult to maintain the sign configurations intended by traffic engineers.

Beginning in 1995 and expanded in 2000, the county implemented a GIS-based sign inventory using Trimble GPS units, GeoXT/Pathfinder handhelds and ESRI ArcPad to create and maintain a digital map of more than 7,000 signs. Field crews can now update sign attributes on-site and sync changes to the master database, cutting travel and paperwork, saving over $20,000 annually, reclaiming 1–2 hours per technician per day, improving data quality and public safety, and earning local and national recognition.
