A Trimble Case Study
Austin Materials, a Central Texas asphalt and aggregate producer and paving contractor, needed to improve competitiveness on airport resurfacing jobs by increasing paving speed, accuracy and site safety. For the 2016 Georgetown Municipal Airport project the company faced tight tolerances, confined work areas and the risk of costly material and schedule overruns if subgrade discrepancies or measurement errors were missed.
Working with SITECH Tejas, Austin Materials deployed the Trimble PCS900 Paving Control System, Trimble SPS930 Universal Total Station and Business Center - HCE, and trained crews on the 3D paving workflow. The result: automatic, millimeter-level grade control that eliminated most staking, caught subgrade inconsistencies, and allowed 8,200 tons of P401 material to be placed in seven shifts while meeting +/-1 mm tolerances — saving more than $6,000 in staking and materials costs, improving safety, and reducing rework risk.
