A Trimble Case Study
Towill, Inc., a California surveying firm, was hired to survey roughly 1,800 ft of a 90‑year‑old, 54‑inch active water main that needed rehabilitation. Because the pipeline ran near major traffic arteries and a treatment plant, excavation was impractical; engineers planned a sliplining solution and gave Towill just eight days to collect precise interior alignment and ovality data under confined, low‑light conditions.
Towill combined Trimble SX10 and S7 total stations (with Trimble Access, Business Center and RealWorks software) and a Faro Focus scanner to perform 130 scanning setups and a redundant open traverse, producing a dense registered point cloud and best‑fit centerline. The analysis identified hidden deflections and clearance issues, supported automated clash detection and optimal liner sizing, met project tolerances, and avoided millions in excavation and disruption costs.
