Delivering error-free cast-in-place concrete structures at Hinkley Point C

Atkins was appointed as the main civils detailed designer for Hinkley Point C, where it had to deliver highly complex cast-in-place concrete structures for the UK’s first new nuclear power station in a generation. The challenge was extremely tight tolerances, dense reinforcement, and zero room for rework or post-fix fixes, making accurate, constructible 3D design essential. Atkins used Trimble’s Tekla Structures as part of its digital workflow to help meet these demands.

With Trimble’s Tekla Structures, Atkins created fully coordinated 3D models for rebar and embeds, enabling digital rehearsal, better construction sequencing, and smoother site logistics. The project has delivered around 60 million pieces of rebar and more than 2 million embeds to 3mm tolerances, while improving productivity, safety, and control over procurement, fabrication, delivery, and on-site assembly.
