Making the structurally complex possible, with Tekla Structural Designer

Civic Engineers was appointed as structural engineers for Burlington House, an 11-storey twisting residential development in Manchester, and needed a way to design a highly complex structure that could not be handled in traditional 2D. Working with Trimble and using Tekla Structural Designer, the team had to balance the architect’s striking vision with structural constraints, limited wall space, and a challenging cantilevered form.

Trimble’s Tekla Structural Designer enabled Civic Engineers to model the building in detailed 3D, test multiple design iterations, and analyse loads, deflections, and temporary works more efficiently. The solution helped the team develop an optimal cast-in-situ concrete design with shear walls, a central core, and post-tensioned slabs, while also improving coordination and saving time through BIM integration with Revit.
