A Trimble Case Study
Trimble Marine Construction software was used on an Alva Construction wharf replacement project in Nova Scotia that required driving 180 piles (132 vertical and 48 batter) from a barge-mounted crane. Alva needed faster, safer positioning and pile-driving guidance because manual crew positioning was time-consuming, hazardous, and they wanted GPS machine control for their floating crane.
Systems integrator Measutronics fitted the crane with pitch/roll sensors, dual GPS antennas, Trimble GNSS receivers and a cab-based laptop running the Trimble software, providing real-time on-screen guidance for location, heading and inclination. After installation (with the project 65% complete for before/after comparison), vertical pile set-and-drive time dropped 40–50% and batter piles by 25% (with an expectation of reaching 50%), improving safety and reducing production time.
