A Trimble Case Study
Wisconsin DOT accelerated and combined multiple segments of the $60M I‑94 North‑South Freeway reconstruction under ARRA, moving the start to 2009 and dramatically shortening construction windows. That compressed schedule and the need to interpret many independent plan sets created a high risk of field misinterpretation and schedule slippage for lead contractor Walsh Group and engineering firm Collins Engineers.
To reduce risk, WisDOT and its contractors hired Kapur & Associates to create “shovel‑accurate” 3D earthwork models and to deploy Trimble GNSS, total‑station and Connected Site technology for real‑time control and surveying. The models and integrated field systems allowed crews to move about 3,000 m3 of material per day, stake pavement to within 1/4 inch vertically and achieve 0.02‑ft calibration—enabling the on‑time opening of the new southbound corridor in December 2009 and keeping the remainder of the project on schedule.
