3D mobile mapping brings efficiency, safety and precision to complex infrastructure projects

Strabag AG, one of Europe’s largest infrastructure contractors, faced a growing challenge: conventional surveying methods were too slow and risky for fast-moving, complex projects like highways, railways and airports. The company needed a way to capture precise as-built data quickly while keeping crews safe and meeting tight design/build schedules.

Strabag adopted Trimble’s MX9 mobile mapping system with the SX10 total station and Trimble Business Center software to collect high-density point clouds and imagery. Teams scanned a 20 km highway section at 80 km/h—capturing the full dataset in two hours with a final DTM accuracy of ~1.5 cm horizontal and 2 cm vertical—integrated UAS imagery, and mapped a 95,000 m² airport apron in one hour. The approach delivered faster, safer surveys, centimeter-grade deliverables and new business opportunities on projects including railway electrification and the €455M Munich Terminal 1 expansion.
