Modeling wind forces with Tekla Structural Designer

Mason Navarro Pledge, a civil and structural engineering firm, was asked to assess the feasibility of a proposed timber canopy for a new wellbeing center in Twickenham, London, beside the River Thames. The team needed to determine whether the complex timber grid-shell design could stand up to strong wind forces coming off the river, and they used Trimble’s Tekla Structural Designer to model the structure.

Using Trimble’s Tekla Structural Designer, Mason Navarro Pledge built a 3D wind model, tested hundreds of wind-load combinations, and identified where the canopy and its concrete frame needed extra strengthening. The analysis helped validate the design, contribute to the project becoming a competition finalist, and earn Special Recognition in the 2020 Tekla Global BIM Awards.
