3-D Scan System gets the new rail eet back on track

Network Rail Scotland faced a time-sensitive challenge as new passenger fleets (including LNER Azuma, class 365s and 385s) and growing freight demands required rapid, precise clearance surveys across the network—including tunnels at Mossgiel, Drumlanrig, Blochairn and Duke St—to confirm rolling stock would fit existing infrastructure and to plan for larger, longer freight trains.

To meet this need the team deployed the Trimble GEDO Scan track‑based 3D scanning system, operated by absolute track geometry engineers. The scanner delivers high‑resolution models with under 5 mm relative accuracy, cuts tunnel survey time to roughly one‑fifth of previous methods, reduces time engineers spend on track, and supports route suitability checks, proactive maintenance and fewer passenger disruptions.
