Whistler’s SkyBridge and Cliffwalk takes BIM to a new altitude

Apex Structural Design faced the challenge of engineering Whistler Blackcomb’s SkyBridge and Cliffwalk in an extreme alpine environment, where the job site was highly inaccessible, precision was critical, and conditions included heavy snow, ice, wind, and subzero temperatures. Using Trimble’s Tekla Structures, the team had to coordinate a complex BIM-driven project involving multiple stakeholders and intricate steel geometry.

Trimble’s Tekla Structures helped Apex Structural Design visualize the structures, align the project team, and quickly evaluate alternate connection methods for the complex A-frame and cantilever designs. The solution supported successful construction and installation, and the SkyBridge opened to the public in summer 2018 as planned. The project also earned Apex Structural Design the 2019 Tekla North America BIM Awards Infrastructure category.
