How Hinkley Point C got a power-up with BIM

BuroHappold Engineering was involved in the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station project, a massive build in the UK with more than 30,000 people on site and enormous amounts of concrete and reinforcement to detail. The team faced the challenge of managing highly complex rebar design and moving toward a paperless, model-based workflow, where traditional drawings were too difficult to read and coordinate.

Trimble supported the project with Tekla Structures, enabling a fully integrated 3D reinforcement model and BIM-based workflows for detailed design. The solution helped automate repetitive tasks, improve data integration and quality assurance, and support early rebar procurement and construction planning. The project achieved more efficient rebar detailing and coordination across 1,000+ RC models and 12,000+ drawings, helping deliver a major power station expected to generate 3.2 GW for 6 million homes.
