University of Maryland Medical Center Utilizes Technology to Streamline Processes

University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), a major academic medical center managing a $40M annual capital improvement program and multiple large building projects, struggled with fragmented project information—paper files, spreadsheets and dispersed email threads—that made reporting and field documentation slow and error-prone. Compiling comprehensive reports and conducting site surveys was time-consuming and heavily dependent on contractors, creating delays and inconsistency across projects.

UMMC implemented the e-Builder Enterprise PMIS as a centralized document and project management system, including a mobile app and robust reporting module. The platform consolidated documents, drawings and audit trails, automated notifications, improved version control and cross-team collaboration, reduced a utility outage report from 8–9 hours to 30 minutes, enabled more predictable RFI/submittal responses, and freed project managers to spend less time on administration and more time on jobsite quality and schedule.
