MMSD Pursues Ambitious Green Infrastructure Goals

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) provides water reclamation and flood management for 1.1 million residents across 28 communities and is pursuing an ambitious green infrastructure goal: capture the first half-inch of rainfall across its service area—about 740 million gallons per rain event—by 2035. Meeting that target amid a century-old sewer system requires a multi-tiered program (GIPP, Green Solutions, Green Schools, and a Corvias partnership) and managing many diverse, often small, contracts and projects proved challenging.

MMSD implemented e-Builder as a central hub for communications, document management, and project oversight; the flexible system enables granular tracking of both large capital projects and numerous small contracts, with controlled vendor access. Using e-Builder to manage thirteen GI projects helped streamline workflows and transparency, and by the end of 2020 MMSD had captured 32.2 million gallons of runoff while aligning programs to advance toward the 2035 goal.
