How the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system uses Trillian to modernize employee communication

Dartmouth‑Hitchcock is a nonprofit academic health system with 10,000+ employees serving a 1.9 million‑person region and handling millions of patient encounters annually. Faced with informal, ad‑hoc instant messaging and strict HIPAA and security requirements, D‑H needed a modern, affordable on‑premises messaging solution because cloud options were unacceptable and alternatives like Microsoft Lync were cost‑prohibitive. They selected Trillian to meet those needs.

Dartmouth‑Hitchcock deployed the data center edition of the on‑premises Trillian Server, keeping PHI encrypted behind the firewall while providing DMZ frontends for external access and clients on desktop and mobile. Trillian enabled real‑time group chats, chatbot and REST API integrations with internal systems, Active Directory integration, and healthcare‑specific controls (PINs, lock screens, encryption), resulting in shorter call times at call centers, faster decision making, smoother coordination (including life‑saving transfers), and predictable, lower costs through concurrent licensing. Trillian’s on‑premises approach gave D‑H the security and compliance they required without breaking the budget.
