A Tridium Case Study
The industrial giant ABB faced a significant integration challenge at its Cityport corporate headquarters, where independent building control systems using BACNET, EIB, and LONWORKS® protocols operated in isolation. ABB needed to unify these disparate networks into a single, web-based control environment to create a showcase "smart" building, a task for which they enlisted the vendor Tridium and its NIAGARA Framework.
Tridium implemented its NIAGARA Framework, embedding it within eight JACE controllers to create a common, distributed environment that communicates with each device using its native protocol, eliminating the need for special gateways. This solution from Tridium provided fast, web-based accessibility from any PC on the intranet, enabling seamless integration with other web-based applications like room booking and access control. The result was a highly interoperable building control system that delivered major operational efficiencies, such as reducing a multi-day room booking process to minutes, and provided the capability for simple future expansion.
