U.S. General Services Administration Chooses Tridium’s Vykon™ to Automate Intelligent Building Project for Chicago Federal Facilities

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) faced a significant integration challenge at its large Chicago Federal Plaza complex. The two-building campus, with 78 floors and over 2.3 million square feet, contained a disparate array of control systems from nine different manufacturers, creating isolated "islands of control" that were difficult to manage. GSA needed an open software solution capable of consolidating these numerous systems and thousands of nodes into a single, manageable interface and turned to Tridium for a solution using its Vykon Building Automation Suite.

Tridium’s Vykon solution provided a unified, web-based platform that integrated over 2,200 nodes and 18,000 points from 14 different manufacturers. The implementation utilized 57 embedded servers to create a high-performance, distributed system with a graphical user interface of over 1,500 web pages. This gave GSA managers real-time, browser-based control and monitoring of building operations from anywhere, enabling immediate action to manage energy consumption and correct issues. The success of this project provided a scalable, open-architecture model that the GSA has since expanded to other federal facilities across the country.
