Case Study: Ameresco achieves unified boiler and alarm system integration with Tridium’s Niagara Framework

Ameresco, a leading independent energy efficiency and renewable energy company, partnered with Tridium to address a challenge at the Tobyhanna Army Depot. The project required upgrading an outdated and decentralized control system to create a single, unified platform. The key challenges were integrating multiple communication protocols (Lon and Modbus) from various new boilers and air rotation units, and enhancing an existing SCADA alarm system with voice call-out capabilities.

Using Tridium's NiagaraAX Framework with JACE controllers, the solution integrated all the disparate controls and protocols into one interoperable system. This included developing a method to transfer alarm data to the SCADA system for voice call-out notifications to maintenance personnel. The results for Ameresco included significantly reduced maintenance and operating costs, a unified system with the flexibility to add new controls regardless of manufacturer, and a better response rate to facility issues thanks to the robust alarm system.
