How Outbrain reduced test authoring time by 95% with custom web app testing

Outbrain, a modern development company running a microservices-based continuous delivery pipeline, faced painful web application testing across more than 100,000 websites. Using Selenium and Protractor, its teams struggled with slow, unstable test authoring and debugging, and web automation was consuming 10–15% of engineering time. Outbrain selected Tricentis Testim to improve in-app workflow UI testing and make test creation easier for more teams.

Tricentis Testim was integrated into Outbrain’s CI pipelines and Jenkins-driven release process for functional and regression testing. The results were significant: the number of teams doing in-app workflow testing grew from 6 to 14, test automation effort dropped to about 5% of web engineering time, and stable test creation time fell from 1–2 days to 20–30 minutes, a 95%+ reduction. Outbrain also reported about 50% higher test coverage and greater developer confidence in the safety net provided by Tricentis.
