University of New Brunswick Gains Visibility into Evolving Threat Landscape with Deep Discovery

The University of New Brunswick (UNB), a long-established public university serving about 11,000 students and tens of thousands of alumni, was hit by a massive surge in targeted malware and ransomware — malicious email volumes rose from 149,000 to over one million in a month — overwhelming its 65‑person IT team and exposing the limits of manual detection and response.

UNB deployed Trend Micro Deep Discovery, integrated with IBM QRadar, to automate detection, prioritize threats and deliver real‑time analysis and reporting. Deep Discovery’s Virtual Analyzer flagged 5,602 suspicious files (including 146 malicious, 91 high‑risk and 236 infected hosts), identified 4.25% of analyzed traffic as malicious across 13,000 samples in 30 days, and saved roughly 2,100 hours and more than $17,000 in manual analysis time while improving QRadar correlation, incident response speed and community awareness.
