Trend Micro Maximises Email and Server Protection for Leicester’s De Montfort University

De Montfort University in Leicester, a gold-rated UK university with about 25,000 students and 3,000 staff using Microsoft Office 365, faced rising cyber threats common to higher education: widespread phishing, financial and state-sponsored attacks, ransomware risk, and the challenge of balancing open access with protection for sensitive research and personal data. Previous basic Office 365 defenses proved insufficient, prompting the IT team to seek a stronger, multi-layered security solution.

Following a tender via reseller Software Box, De Montfort deployed Trend Micro solutions—Deep Security, Smart Protection Complete (including OfficeScan/Apex One), Hosted Email Security, and Cloud App Security. The change delivered measurable gains: Hosted Email Security now blocks about four million suspicious emails monthly, Cloud App Security added DLP and sandboxing for Office 365, and Deep Security’s IPS and virtual patching protected legacy servers until decommissioning. The university reports easier deployment, higher protection rates, and a strong ongoing relationship with Trend Micro.
