Automating Threat Discovery and Mitigation on RNDC Hub & Spoke Network

Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC) is the second-largest premium wine and spirits distributor in the U.S., with more than 8,000 employees and a centralized Atlanta data center supporting a hub-and-spoke WAN. Despite multilayer, multivendor security, RNDC suffered a prolonged Conficker outbreak that disrupted warehouses, file access and deliveries, revealing gaps in visibility, the need to catch attacks before endpoints, automate investigations, customize defenses for its topology, and scale intrusion prevention as traffic and virtualization grew.

RNDC deployed Trend Micro’s Threat Discovery appliance and later Deep Discovery with Threat Mitigator to monitor network traffic, sandbox suspicious files and automate investigations. The tools quickly identified infection sources and stopped the outbreak in a day, surfaced thousands of previously unseen events (5,000 in two months), greatly reduced remediation time and IT effort, and restored and safeguarded business continuity.
