A Transplace Case Study
Global Steel Manufacturer, a decentralized global producer of steel products with manufacturing plants in the U.S. and Mexico, needed to cut network costs by 15% and bring more structure to its freight sourcing and carrier management. With over $55 million in over-the-road, cross-border, drayage, and rail freight, the company relied heavily on FTL shipping and flatbed trailers, but its historical, localized approach lacked a unified freight spend baseline and formal RFP process. Transplace was brought in through its Supply Chain Consulting Practice to support the effort with Strategic Transportation Optimization.
Transplace helped the manufacturer build a validated freight spend baseline, run a multi-round network-wide RFP, train carriers through bilingual sessions, and create optimized routing strategies for U.S., Mexico, and cross-border shipments. The project improved visibility and carrier relationships, reduced the carrier base by 26%, implemented a new fuel schedule in Mexico, and delivered 17% overall savings, equal to more than $9.7 million annually.
