A TransPerfect Case Study
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), which supplies drinking water to nearly 18 million people across a large Southern California service area, faced a growing challenge getting its annual multilingual water quality report into the hands of non‑English‑speaking residents. TransPerfect was already handling translation and typesetting for emerging languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Tagalog, but the MWD needed a way to reliably reach diverse ethnic communities with the translated materials.
TransPerfect assembled teams of cultural outreach consultants—drawn from its global language network—to research and identify 20–30 targeted outreach venues per community (churches, social clubs, restaurants, marketplaces and local businesses). Each team delivered actionable reports with venue contact details and outreach rationale, enabling the MWD to increase circulation of the annual report and more effectively reach its non‑English‑speaking audiences. TransPerfect’s work directly improved the organization’s ability to distribute its water quality information across Southern California’s diverse populations.
