Capitalizing on Maine’s School Transportation Software Program Yields Substantial and Long Term Results for RSU 44

RSU 44, a rural school district in Bethel, Maine, transports 767 students to three elementary schools and one shared middle school/high school across 270,000 miles a year. When transportation director Ron Deegan joined the district in 2007, routing was still done manually, with routes drawn by hand and paper used to track routes and field trip scheduling. RSU 44 later joined Maine’s school transportation software program with Transfinder.

Transfinder provided Routefinder Pro, Infofinder le, Infofinder I, and Servicefinder to help RSU 44 manage routing, communication, field trips, community bus information, and fleet maintenance. The software helped Deegan adjust routes when two drivers retired, keeping student ride time changes minimal while saving the district $27,000 a year. It also gave him the data needed to project ride times for a possible school closure, and the district has since moved nearly paperless with online access for administrators, staff, parents, and the community.
