Shape Properties saves 596,000 kWh in one year with Trane Commercial

Shape Properties, the developer of Lougheed Town Centre, faced challenges with inefficient and inadequate cooling from two separate chillers at their shopping mall. The system provided poor chilled water distribution, leaving some areas uncomfortable, and consumed excessive energy. They enlisted their facilities partner, Trane Commercial, for a solution involving chiller plant upgrades.

Trane Commercial re-piped the chiller plant, reconfigured the two Trane CenTraVac chillers to operate in lead/lag sequence, and added a variable frequency drive and free cooling option. This was managed through an expanded Trane Tracer Summit automation system. The results included vastly improved cooling distribution and substantial energy savings of 596,000 kWh in the first year, which exceeded estimates and secured a $190,000 utility rebate for the customer.
