Savvis Communications, a major managed services and hosting provider, needed to upgrade its mission-critical Weehawken, New Jersey data center because the existing chilled water plant controls could not provide the precise monitoring and reliability required. The facility’s 10 Trane air-cooled chillers were running at full capacity and delivering colder-than-designed water, creating both operational risk and major energy waste.

Trane Commercial worked with Systecon and Nova Corporation to install Systecon VariPrime control panels and Trane Tracer Summit building control units tied into the site’s automation system, along with kW metering for better visibility. The upgrade was completed early with zero disruption to customers, reduced energy use from about 2.0 kW per ton to 1.3 kW per ton, saved roughly $177,000 per month, qualified for $35,000 in utility rebates, and delivered an 18-month payback.
