Pfizer, at its Groton/New London research facilities in Connecticut, needed to convert an existing retail building into a laboratory while meeting extremely strict environmental conditions: 70°F and only 30 grains of humidity. The coastal location made humidity control especially difficult, so Pfizer worked with Trane Commercial on an HVAC upgrade that included CDQ™ desiccant dehumidification technology.

Trane Commercial implemented a custom 20,000 cfm air handling system with the Trane CDQ™ unit, reusing an existing air handler as a supply fan and adding a 125-ton “pony” chiller for peak humid conditions. The solution met Pfizer’s temperature and humidity requirements, improved sample quality and consistency, and delivered about 20% energy savings compared with a conventional design.
