North Carolina Museum of Art - Customer Case Study

North Carolina Museum of Art needed to protect its priceless collection while dealing with major temperature and humidity swings that threatened artwork and limited its ability to host traveling exhibits. Trane Commercial was brought in through a performance contracting process to help the museum find a cost-effective way to upgrade its aging HVAC and controls systems.

Trane Commercial implemented a full retrofit that included a dedicated outside air handling unit, conversion of constant volume air handlers to variable air volume, centralized humidification, new variable-speed chillers, updated cooling tower controls, and a building automation system. The project cut humidity fluctuations to just 5%, enabled the museum to meet strict “AA” ASHRAE indoor environment standards, and delivered more than $500,000 in annual savings, along with over $30,000 per year in reduced energy costs from a lower service tariff.
