Monongahela Valley Hospital - Customer Case Study

Monongahela Valley Hospital, a 280,000-square-foot, 226-bed full-service health care facility in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, needed to replace its aging 1970s chiller plant without any cooling downtime. To keep patients and staff comfortable while meeting its zero-downtime requirements and reducing energy costs, the hospital turned to Trane Commercial for a turnkey chiller plant replacement and control integration solution.

Trane Commercial installed a modular, pre-built chiller plant with two 400-ton high-efficiency CenTraVac centrifugal chillers, a free-cooling heat exchanger, VFDs on key equipment, and a Tracer SC control system integrated with the hospital’s existing HVAC controls. The upgraded plant was completed without disrupting hospital operations and is reducing energy and maintenance costs while improving efficiency and comfort; according to the hospital, the plant exceeded expectations, and the second chiller was not needed during a July heat wave.
