LOTT Cleanwater Alliance - Customer Case Study

LOTT Cleanwater Alliance, which serves about 90,000 people in the Olympia, Washington area, needed a better way to handle methane gas generated at its Budd Inlet Treatment Plant. The plant was flaring most of the gas, wasting energy and creating complaints from nearby residents. LOTT turned to Trane Commercial for an energy-saving solution using an Energy Services Performance Contract.

Trane Commercial designed and installed a high-efficiency cogeneration system and blower retrofit, including a new gas treatment system, a 335 kW reciprocating engine with heat recovery, two natural gas boilers, and a high-efficiency turbine blower with variable frequency drive. The project eliminated flaring, reduced emissions by more than 1,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, and is expected to save more than 2.8 million kWh and over $228,000 in utility costs each year.
