A Trane Commercial Case Study
Kingston General Hospital, a 456-bed general hospital in Kingston, Ontario, faced an aging chiller plant that included chillers 30 to 40 years old with poor efficiency and insufficient peak cooling capacity. The hospital experienced temperature-control problems serious enough to cancel scheduled surgeries, and planned expansions would add even more demand. Trane Commercial was brought in to help address the challenge, along with a chiller plant management system and related HVAC upgrades.
Trane Commercial delivered a turnkey upgrade that replaced two old chillers with two Trane Model CVHF centrifugal chillers, added new cooling towers with variable frequency fan drives, and installed a Tracer Summit chiller plant management system. The project was completed on time and within budget before the peak cooling season, improving reliability, comfort, and dehumidification. Kingston General Hospital reported a 40% reduction in energy use by its comfort systems, along with a capacity gain of 510 tons within the same floor area.
