Jefferson Community College - Customer Case Study

Jefferson Community College (JCC), a SUNY campus in Watertown, NY, needed a way to support a new 36,958 sq. ft. Collaborative Learning Center and add cooling to an adjacent building without significantly increasing operating costs. To align with its Climate Action Plan and sustainability goals, the college turned to Trane Commercial for an energy-efficient HVAC solution, using an EarthWise™ Ice-Enhanced Air-Cooled Chiller Plant.

Trane Commercial implemented a thermal storage system featuring a 90-ton CGAM air-cooled scroll chiller, four CALMAC IceBank® tanks, and Tracer™ SC controls. The system makes ice at night and uses it during the day to shift cooling demand to off-peak hours, helping Jefferson Community College move 150 kW of peak demand to cheaper nighttime electricity, reduce energy costs, and create a campus teaching station to showcase sustainability benefits.
