California State Lottery cuts peak cooling costs 21% with Trane Commercial

The California State Lottery faced the challenge of operating from an inefficient and expensive building. They sought to construct a new, functional headquarters that was highly energy efficient, including a Zero Net Energy pavilion, while also meeting strict state regulations and achieving LEED Gold certification. They partnered with Trane Commercial to implement a solution using high-efficiency chillers and energy storage systems.

Trane implemented a solution using Series R helical rotary screw chillers and CALMAC Ice Bank energy storage tanks. This system creates ice at night using off-peak energy, which is then used for cooling during peak daytime hours. Combined with solar panels on the pavilion, this allowed the facility to achieve its goals. The results included LEED Gold certification and a 21 percent reduction in cooling costs during peak hours, with Trane helping create a comfortable and economical facility.
