A Trane Commercial Case Study
Baylor College of Medicine, a medical school and research facility in Houston, faced a major challenge after Tropical Storm Allison flooded its below-grade central chiller plant in 2001, causing significant loss of research data. To prevent a repeat and maintain reliable cooling, Baylor worked with Trane Commercial and its regional representative Hunton Trane to find a standby solution that would fit within the college’s limited space.
Trane Commercial proposed a Trane/TAS Modular Chiller Plant with Trane chillers and Tracer Summit™ chiller plant controls, installed over the existing truck dock and parking area. The project secured FEMA funding, was completed quickly, and delivered 5,000 tons of cooling capacity; TAS built the plant in six weeks and it was installed over a single weekend, with chilled water flowing within six weeks. The new Trane system also improved efficiency by up to 15 percent over the existing chillers while solving Baylor’s space, capacity, and construction cost challenges.
