Agnico Eagle, a Canadian gold producer, faced major cooling challenges in its Laronde mine in Quebec, where extreme heat, humidity, dust, limited space, and harsh underground operating conditions caused repeated failures in three installed Trane 1000-ton chillers. The company needed a more reliable solution to keep workers comfortable deep below the surface.

Trane responded with engineering support, onsite troubleshooting, and analysis of failed parts, then recommended and supplied five custom 1300-ton Trane CenTraVac™ centrifugal chillers designed for extreme conditions. The new units improved reliability and safety, eliminating surge issues and reducing leak risk underground; Agnico Eagle said it could now run four chillers with one spare, giving the mine greater flexibility, capacity, and efficiency.
