Stanford Law School Saves Money by Omitting their Outdated Spreadsheet System

Stanford Law School was relying on an outdated, spreadsheet-driven process to track hundreds of students’ pro bono hours — an online form that fed an Excel “black box,” required a paid student coordinator to maintain records, and left students unable to view their submissions. Michael Winn, Director of the Pro Bono and Externship Programs, searched for a cloud-based solution and selected Track it Forward to replace the manual system.

Track it Forward was set up and all users imported, giving students self-service profiles to log hours and allowing organizers to run milestone summaries and project reports (students aim for 50/150/300-hour distinctions). The vendor’s platform eliminated reliance on archived spreadsheets, reduced staff time and coordination costs, improved reporting accuracy, and increased participation through simple invites and quarterly reminders — benefits Stanford attributes directly to Track it Forward.
