Animal Shelter Uses Data to Recruit and Retain Volunteers

The Humane Society of Delaware County, led by Volunteer & Foster Coordinator Lauren Schnieders, runs adoption, cruelty investigation, and low‑cost clinic programs and relies heavily on volunteers. To address challenges in recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers—and to get clearer visibility into how volunteer time was spent—they began using Track it Forward about a year ago alongside a new Volunteer Behavior Wellness Program with tiered training levels.

Using Track it Forward to log hours and categorize activities, the shelter now runs regular reports to see month‑to‑month time allocation and target recruitment and training to areas that need more support. Track it Forward’s tracking and reporting, combined with the tiered recognition program, has significantly improved the shelter’s efficiency and effectiveness, increased volunteer engagement and retention, and made it easier to recognize and reward volunteers for their service.
