Case Study: Port of New York/New Jersey achieves fluid cargo flow with TRAC Intermodal chassis pool solutions

A TRAC Intermodal LLC Case Study

Port of NY/NJ maintains fluidity through 11.3% cargo growth with TRAC Intermodal LLC

The Port of New York and New Jersey, the third busiest port in the U.S., faced the challenge of ensuring chassis fluidity to support a record 11.3% increase in cargo volume between 2017 and 2019, compounded by sudden demand spikes. The port needed to manage the flow of containers and trucks effectively, requiring quality chassis equipment and operational effectiveness to enable timely and efficient out-gating for its customers. TRAC Intermodal LLC, as the port's largest chassis provider, was a key vendor in addressing this challenge through its chassis pool service.

TRAC Intermodal implemented a solution centered on the port's move to off-terminal chassis depots, which allowed TRAC to launch its Quality Fleet Care programs. This included a $350 million fleet modernization initiative, a fleet optimization program for forecasting and availability, and efficient maintenance and repair processes. The results ensured fluidity despite record cargo growth and demand spikes, with TRAC's pool being named "Best Overall Chassis Provider" for three consecutive years. Motor carrier efficiency increased due to the depots' central locations, equipment quality improved with over 55% of the fleet upgraded, and the model provided cost savings and enhanced chassis availability.
