Case Study: XL Construction reopens pediatric unit six weeks early with Touchplan

A Touchplan Case Study

Preview of the XL Construction Case Study

Collaboration to Maintain a predictable workflow

XL Construction faced a fast-moving, high-risk renovation: a pediatric unit in an occupied hospital required a full overhaul after pervasive mold was discovered, and work had to finish before the onset of RSV season while avoiding disruption to adjacent cardiac and clinical areas. To manage the compressed schedule and growing scope—valve and plumbing replacements, removal of galvanized piping, and med-gas work—XL Construction adopted Touchplan and Lean Last Planner practices to bring predictability to a complex, live-healthcare environment.

Using the Touchplan platform combined with takt planning, the project team broke work into four flow units, held focused daily/weekly ticket-driven meetings, and enforced performer-customer commitments to reduce variation and rework. The Touchplan-enabled approach delivered measurable results: the renovation finished six weeks early, the pediatric unit reopened in time for RSV season, leftover funds were used for upgrades, and productivity gains helped win follow-on work.
