University Hospital Southampton Nhs Foundation Trust Upgrades From Moodle to Totara to Achieve Big Benefits for the Organisation and Learners

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is a large NHS provider serving local and specialist populations and supporting over 15,000 learners, including many transient doctors and students. While UHS had used Moodle for blended learning, it could not reliably track or report the complex, recurring statutory and mandatory training required by the Trust and external regulators; compliance reporting was manual, time‑consuming and not accessible to managers, putting pressure on compliance levels.

UHS moved to a fresh Totara Learn implementation (retaining key Moodle plugins and content) with single sign‑on, bespoke theming, integrated HR hierarchies, dynamic audience management, certifications and a classroom module. The Trust gained real‑time, colour‑coded compliance dashboards and automated reporting to meet internal and CQC requirements, eliminated a separate compliance system, empowered managers and learners, reduced administrative burden and improved engagement and training completion.
