The Humanitarian Leadership Academy Aids 190 Countries With Life-saving E-learning

Humanitarian Leadership Academy trains local communities to prepare for and respond to crises so they don’t have to wait for outside expertise. Their challenge was to democratise life‑saving training—making it affordable, relevant and reachable for diverse audiences across low‑bandwidth, mobile and multilingual environments so small organisations and non‑professional responders can access just‑in‑time learning.

Working with Totara partner Catalyst they built Kaya on Totara Learn plus regional Academy Centres, using open‑source technology to enable programs, multi‑language support, SSO (Humanitarian ID), custom dashboards, offline learning and a global CDN for fast access. The site went live in six weeks, is already proving popular with Centre registration, is designed to scale to ~100,000 users, and benefits from reusable open‑source components and future plans for badges, certification and expanded user‑centred features.
