The Australian Department of Defence adopts agile learning platform for skill identification & rapid deployment

The Australian Department of Defence, a government agency responsible for Australia’s security and military capability, needed to modernize its educational technology to better identify skills, support professional development, and enable collaboration and employee mobility across federal agencies. It was looking for a platform that could handle both traditional LMS needs and newer LXP-style learning experiences, including self-directed, social, and AI-supported learning, and selected Totara as part of the solution.

Totara implemented a flexible Learn eXcel Perform (LXP) platform configuration for Defence and other agencies, supporting capability frameworks, shared resources, course migration, and reporting across tenancies. The pilot showed strong results, including seamless LinkedIn Learning integration and a 127% increase in seats activated within IP Australia after launch; following the trial, the participating agencies recommended the platform for whole-of-government use and moved ahead with full implementation plans.
