Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STH), one of the UK’s largest NHS trusts with around 16,000 staff and 500 volunteers, faced fragmented mandatory training management: the NHS ESR/OLM system couldn’t record local training, track volunteers or support different training profiles across directorates, and managers lacked a single source of accurate compliance reporting. STH also needed faster, cost-effective ways to deliver bespoke e‑learning for diverse clinical and legislative needs that previously required external developers.
By adopting Totara (built on Moodle), STH created role‑specific profiles for staff and volunteers, enabled local delivery with centralized reporting, and rapidly deployed online courses (some live within a week) including quizzes, videos, assignments and automated feedback. The platform improved accessibility on any device, streamlined management of job‑specific essential training, increased centrally reported compliance to over 90% within 18 months, saved staff time and delivered transparent reporting for educators, managers and the board.
