Oakland Schools brings teachers together for collaborative learning

Oakland Schools, the intermediate school district serving Oakland County, Michigan, needed a more robust learning platform to support professional development for teachers and administrators. Their existing Moodle setup could deliver K–12 content but could not track individual learning records or integrate Google Apps and collaborative group work across independent districts — capabilities required to make workplace learning more connected and measurable.

After an RFP, Oakland Schools chose Totara Learn and engaged Totara Partner Synegen to migrate and configure the system. Synegen built learning pathways, learner tracking and dynamic groups, and created web services to sync shared Google resources (files, calendars, Hangouts, YouTube) into the LMS. The open-source solution reduced costs and increased stability; early feedback has been very positive, with users embracing community-driven collaboration and plans underway to add Open Badges, seminars and more social features.
