Mitchells & Butlers Creates a Learning Culture with Totara Social That’s Delivering Results

Mitchells & Butlers, the UK hospitality group behind more than 1,700 pubs and restaurants and 46,000 employees, needed a single, engaging learning destination that made people feel part of the wider group rather than just their local brand. Existing LMS and course content weren’t pulling learners in; the brief was for a mobile-first, social, bite-sized learning experience that promoted collaboration, performance support at the point of need, and faster iteration of content and platform features.

Partnering with Kineo and Totara, they launched MABLE — a Totara Social + Totara Learn environment personified by a playful character, “Mable,” to drive engagement. The social-first, mobile-responsive platform quickly delivered measurable results: 89% compliance rates, digitised safety training and associated cost savings, a 5% lift in food-quality scores after menu training, minimal business disruption from norovirus, and heavy adoption (first month: 20,000 logins; first year: 434,389 course completions, 232,667 minutes of video watched, thousands of forum posts and millions of points awarded), with learners actively requesting more content.
