Medborgarskolan selects Totara Learn to support its open learning ethos across Sweden

Medborgarskolan is a Swedish nonprofit adult-education organisation that runs courses and cultural activities open to everyone, serving about 150,000 learners a year across many regions. Faced with widely distributed learners, varied regional needs and a mandate to help close the digital gap, they needed a very user‑friendly, flexible LMS that could reduce administrative workload, support leaders with different tech skills, and provide a central bank of reusable course materials.

Working with local partner Xtractor, Medborgarskolan implemented Totara Learn, integrated it with their administration system for seamless user syncing, and set up a master-course workflow to rapidly replicate 20–30 regional versions. The platform was streamlined by switching off unused features, mobile‑optimised, and expanded from text to video and interactive content; today they have around 600 users with expectations of significant organic growth, value Totara’s open‑source fit with their ethos, and plan to scale and continue innovating with Xtractor.
