Lidl's Learners "Go Shopping" in Their Course Catalogue for Customized Training

Lidl, the German discount supermarket with over 10,000 stores worldwide and more than 430 stores, 6 warehouses and 18,500 employees in the Netherlands, needed a single, futureproof digital platform to support employees’ professional and personal development. Their brief was to give learners more autonomy and responsibility for career development while centralizing mandatory compliance training and everyday learning resources.

Working with Dutch Totara partner UP learning, Lidl implemented Totara Learn and relaunched the LMS with a refreshed UI and restructured catalogue of mandatory and optional content (e-learning, audiobooks, ebooks and expert talks). Employees build personal learning plans from performance conversations, use automated enrolment and reminders for compliance, and “go shopping” with allocated learning points to choose courses—driving ownership and reducing dropouts. The platform now supports ~3,500 active users, nearly 60,000 logins since 2018, 2,500 course completions in 2019, and proved vital for rapid, consistent COVID-19 blended learning.
