A Totara Case Study
Ko Awatea, the innovation hub within Counties Manukau District Health Board, needed a way to break down silos across New Zealand’s healthcare sector and make e-learning accessible to DHBs that lacked the resources to build their own LMS. Working with Totara Learn, Ko Awatea aimed to create a shared platform, LEARN, that could connect educators and learners nationwide while reducing cost barriers and duplication.
Totara, implemented through partner Catalyst, delivered the Totara Learn-based LEARN platform with shared course development, a consistent user experience, and strong support for IT assurance and data protection. The result was a major national learning network with more than 23,000 users and 500 courses across 11 DHBs, saving an estimated $135,000–$270,000 a year in LMS running costs and over 300 hours of development time, while providing around $1.24 million worth of training.
